Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Guide 2026
What are the rounds in an FDE interview?
Names and order vary by company, but most loops contain these rounds.
| Round | What it tests | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | Motivation, communication, basic fit for customer-facing work | A two-minute story of why FDE, with one example of working directly with users. |
| Coding screen | A floor of practical coding ability, usually not the deciding round | Practical problems (parsing, APIs, data wrangling) in your strongest language. Talk while you code. |
| Decomposition (open-ended case) | Turning a vague, high-stakes brief into a clear, staged plan | Practise the 6-step framework below out loud on a timer. This is the highest-weight round. |
| Client simulation | Customer judgement: pushing back, handling pressure, explaining clearly | Role-play difficult stakeholder moments: unrealistic demands, security objections, scope creep. |
| Deployment / system design | Designing for a real customer environment: identity, data, security, cost | Design under constraints: permissions, on-prem, POC-to-production, agent approvals. |
| Practical / unfamiliar codebase | Getting productive fast in code you did not write | Practise adding a small feature to an open-source repo you have never seen, in under an hour. |
| Behavioural / values | Ownership, ambiguity, disagreement, learning from failure | Five prepared stories with specifics and a lesson each. |
How do Palantir, OpenAI and Anthropic FDE interviews differ?
As reported by public interview guides in 2026. Processes change; confirm details with your recruiter.
Palantir
Originated the open-ended decomposition format and publishes guidance on it. Reported at 5–6 rounds over roughly 4–5 weeks.
OpenAI
Tests deployment thinking under ambiguity and client communication, with an emphasis on enterprise use cases across industries.
Anthropic
Similar focus, reported to lean towards safety-aware deployment in regulated or high-stakes settings. Reported as one of the faster loops, around 3 weeks.
How do you answer a decomposition question?
Interviewers watch how you turn an under-specified brief into a plan, not whether you reach a particular answer. Use these six steps out loud, and keep checking in with the interviewer.
1. Restate the outcome
Turn the brief into a measurable goal, with a baseline and who owns it.
2. Map users and workflow
Who does the work today, step by step, and where time or money is lost.
3. Find the constraint
Data, access, regulation, security, adoption. Name what would stop the project.
4. Lay out options by value and risk
Separate decisions AI should support from ones it should never make.
5. Pick the smallest valuable slice
One user, one task, one metric, a pilot you could run in 4–8 weeks.
6. Say how you would know
Success criteria, an evaluation, and the result that would make you stop.

FDE interview FAQ
What is the Forward Deployed Engineer interview process?
Most loops have a recruiter screen, a coding screen, an open-ended decomposition case, a client simulation, a deployment or system design round, sometimes a practical round in an unfamiliar codebase, and a behavioural round. Roughly half the process is case studies and stakeholder judgement rather than coding.
What is the FDE decomposition interview?
An open-ended case where you get a vague, high-stakes brief, such as reducing hospital wait times, and must turn it into a clear plan. Interviewers score how you clarify the goal, find constraints and choose a first step, not whether you reach a single right answer. Palantir popularised the format.
How long does the FDE interview process take?
Reported timelines are about 3 to 4 weeks at AI startups and 4 to 6 weeks at Palantir, OpenAI and Anthropic, from recruiter screen to offer.
Do FDE interviews include LeetCode?
Usually there is a coding screen, but it acts as a floor rather than the deciding round. Practical coding matters more than puzzle-style algorithms, and the decomposition and client rounds carry the most weight.
How should I prepare for an FDE interview?
Practise decomposition cases out loud on a timer with a framework, role-play difficult customer conversations, prepare deployment designs for realistic constraints, and have five behavioural stories ready. Use the free questions on this page and the FDE simulator.
